Ulva Journal
2010

In the winter of 2010 I travelled to the small Island of Ulva, in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. My father, my aunt and I made the trip to visit their elderly parents who had been living in an off-grid cottage there for several decades. The island’s population grew to 8 during our stay. Despite having visited a number of times across my childhood I had never before come to the island during the winter. While there, Great Britain was blanketed with record snow and ice and we were unable to leave to the larger more populous Island of Mull. This trip was the last time that I saw my Paternal Grandfather, who passed the following winter.
